Born to a Liberian mother and a German father, MAKINTO (George Friebe-Makinto) was soon interested in integrating both sides of this cultural heritage into his music. He studied classical music in Germany, traditional and modern African music in various African countries. MAKINTO further studied American and other forms of black music, including Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Latin American and Brazilian music, while living successively in Germany, the US, Liberia, Spain, Canary Islands, Ivory Coast and France. His natural curiosity, his interest in other cultures and music made him travel through over 60 countries.

He says: "Only if we increase the knowledge about our neighbor through genuine compassion, can we tear down the idols of division and hate erected by ignorance."

MAKINTO started his musical career by playing simple wooden flutes, then studied classical piano, guitar, classical C-flute, saxophone, percussions, Balaphone and Cora. His main instruments are the flute and the piano.

He discovered his love for theater during his elementary and high school years, performing in school plays, self-directed musicals, and improvisation workshops. He is an accomplished storyteller, well trained through daily exercise with his children and many Story-telling events he performed at.

Highlights of his career include intense moments performing with traditional tube-players from the ethnical group Gullah on Tasso Island in Sierra Leone, while touring West Africa with talented saxophonist Talib Kibwe in 1990; performing with Miriam Makeba and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Rome for the Pope Jean Paul II in the Vatican on Christmas 1995, arranging the orchestral score the previous night; later on performing for the Pope at the legendary Maracana soccer stadium of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1997; playing a memorable concert in Pula, Croatia with Philip Catherine in 1997 after a 2 hour lunch and a 10 minute rehearsal, having met Philip only at the lunch; directing a choir of 130 Breton singers and performing a live TV broadcasted Gospel show in Douarnenez, France and making them clap on 2 and 4, in 1995; winning the Coup de Pouce prize for the best musical theater performance during the International Theater Festival of Avignon, France, with his One Man Show Merci Mama Africa which he wrote and performed in 1993; performing together with Talib Kibwe in San Francisco in a fundraising event at the Fairmount Hotel for actor Danny Glover; performing with Miriam Makeba for the 40th anniversary of the independence of Ghana in Accra in 1997; performing for the “Worship His Majesty” event at Madison square garden, NYC in 2003 and 2004.

His humanitarian engagement, his involvement in the United Nations as delegate and committee member and his recognition as international artist gained him the privilege of being appointed Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Development of WAFUNIF (World association of Former United Nations Interns and Fellows) of the United Nations in 2001, New York City.

His discography includes: MOUSSOUBA (1995); AN AFRICAN IN PARIS (1997); MALIMBA-Music is Hope (1999) A FRESH ANOINTING (producer and composer) (2002), I’VE COME TO WORSHIP HIS MAJESTY (2003); UNIFY US, HOLY SPIRIT (2004) and his newest release JOURNEY TO FAITH (2006)
